Vancouver Transformations

From the holistic use of the cedar by the First Nations of the Coast, to the lumber industry that spawned the city’s rapid growth, to our current cultural exploitation of the forest for leisure and tourism -- Vancouver has always had a unique and complex relationship to wood and to the forest.

For an upcoming exhibition,  a series of tree-like exhibition structures provide an immersive space that explores the history of Vancouver through its relationship to wood.

Drawing on basket-weaving traditions and timber-frame construction, and combining traditional boat-building techniques with contemporary digital wood-fabrication technology, the design merges the forest and city, the historic and contemporary, natural and manufactured.
